Farms :

Farms in the Garden Route are generally not commercially viable. Most farms do produce a small income for the owners, but it is normally not enough to live off.
Quite a number of farms in the area have additional cottages on them for either long or short term rental, providing additional income.

In recent years, farm owners have turned to higher value crops such as :

  • Cut flowers
  • Viticulture
  • Specialised crops – eg Macadamias, tunnel grown fruit and vegetables
  • New varieties of fruit

Advantages of living on a farm :

  • Many people enjoy privacy and wide open spaces.
  • Ideal for people with hobbies or home industries.
  • Contrary to popular belief, many of the farming areas in the Garden Route, actually turn out to be more crime free than living in one of the towns.
  • Lower rates ad taxes
  • Lower electricity tariffs
  • Better lifestyle
